In a Kolkata auditorium there was a Ghazal Show,
audience was enjoying and swooning on soulful singing. The singer was Jagjit Singh.
The audience was ecstatic and the show was slowly reaching to its final
moments, suddenly after Jagjit Singh finished one of the last Ghazals he was
singing in the program, the organizer came on the dais, and started speaking,
his voice was choking with emotion.
He said, todays show and Jagjit ji's performance is
very special, very unique one. I dont think anyone else in the world could have
performed the way Jagjit ji has done, the audience was silent and was wondering
what is unique about the program, it’s as entertaining and musical as any other
program performance of Ghazal Maestro. The organizer went on to say, today
morning when Jagjit ji was coming to Kolkata for this show, at the airport he
got the news of his mother’s demise, he cancelled his flight to Kolkata and
went to Delhi instead. He did the last rites of his mother, and to keep the
commitment and save me from losing face and money, Today evening he caught a
flight from Delhi to Kolkata, reached here and is now performing for you.
Jagjit's Singh’s violinist Deepak Pandit, while
narrating this incident, said, Jagjit Singh was very calm and composed and
entertained his audience the whole evening. It was only when he was back in his
hotel, in his room, he cried and cried inconsolably.
Commitment involves feeling as well as thinking.
It is the result of a well-documented formula: Thoughts plus feelings equal
action.
Life without commitment is meaningless; your control
of your destiny depends on your decisions, the decisions which are based on
your value system, your interest and belief.
Just being interested or having passion is not enough,
just having the intention to succeed won’t make you successful. For one
successful actor in the film industry, there are thousands of equally talented
actors, who could not achieve that level of glory or success. Some might blame
it on luck, which may be an element, but more often than not it would be an
excuse for those who could not make it, if you dig deeper you will find grit,
commitment and hard work and tenacity to stick to the decision.
Jack of all and master of none is an old saying.
Mastering anything or being excellent in any area needs a definite commitment.
The commitment following the decision or choice that one has made.
There may be error of judgements in taking decisions,
every decision may not be perfect, as none of us know what is there in store
for us in future. But that cannot be an excuse for not keeping one’s
commitment. The promise to oneself, that he will keep his word would only
promise him success.
A commitment is a binding pledge that obligates you to
assume a position or carry out a course of action. Making a commitment to what you do—whether in
your personal life or your professional life—is one of the most fundamental
principles of success.
One has to burn the bridge to be really true to one’s
commitment. There is no option of going back. If a decision is taken,
commitment is made, it should be absolutely non-negotiable.
Commitments influence your attitude, your behaviour, and
your action. Commitment is always absolute; it can never be in parts or
percentage. When you commit something, your entire being is bound by the
promise that you have made to yourself. There is no excuses, no exits, no
quitting and no looking back.
In addition, a strong commitment, gives you a guide
map, a performance script, a process map to handle things when challenges occur.
Yes, there would always be times when you feel like quitting, and your
intelligent brain would give you very pertinent reasons and options, but the
real mettle of an achiever comes into play under such circumstances. Die-Hard
attitude of an achiever differentiates him from quitters. Quitting is addictive
and compulsive. Once your mind learns to quit, it will make you run at the
slightest of challenge.
Whether it’s a relationship or marriage, job or
career venture, fitness or health, or a personal improvement goal, the
temptation to give up will arise. The key is to anticipate it and make yourself
a promise that the feeling of wanting to quit will not overpower your
commitment. There is a famous dialogue from a Salman Khan movie, which says “Ek
Baar jo maine commitment kar di, fir main apne aap ki bhi nahi sunta”
illustrates the importance of not giving in to second thoughts, enticement, convenience
logic. This also means that one should commit to things that one is meaning to
do
We should avoid the tendency to over commit. Sometimes
in excitement or in overconfidence we tend to overcommit, the commitment on
delivery, the commitment on time, the commitment on results. One should be
aware of his practical limits and resources, while committing. You will always
be honoring your commitments if you don’t overcommit.
There are enough opportunities, enough options to see,
just to grab an opportunity and being too keen to capture a contract one should
not over commit and fail. Keeping in mind your resources, competencies, support
system is very important while giving commitment. This principle is true for
professional and personal associations.
Committing too much in a relationship, might result in
broken promises, destroyed relationships. Saying NO is always better than going
back on commitment with some excuses, Yes excuses because after a broken
commitment, there are no reasons, only excuses. So state them when they are
reasons to save discomfort and inconvenience.
Honoured commitment means satisfied people, fulfilled
promises means rich association, success and satisfaction.
Sometimes you might feel that honoring a commitment is
not worth the effort and is lot of hassle, this could be because of
misjudgement or a bad decision while giving a commitment, but even this is not
an excuse to go back on your commitment. The additional cost incurred in terms
of time, money and effort should be taken as learning expenditure, of course
you can inform the person or organization in question that you misjudged and
honoring the commitment is causing you problems, but still you will honor your
commitment and would not go back on your words. This will add further value to
your integrity and would form a very strong stepping stone in your ladder of
success.
Honoring commitment is part of the character and a
strong ingredient forming your integrity; it’s an element of your personality
which adds significant value to you as a brand. Every cost is worth every
penny, if it is invested in building your brand as a person of integrity,
honesty and commitment and would always prove profitable.
